DuraVie Care Guide: Cleaning and Disinfection Protocols for Estheticians, Nail Artists, and Cosmetology Professionals

How to Clean & Care for Your DuraVie Body Cover

Caring for your DuraVie Body Cover is straightforward and designed to align with professional infection control practices across esthetics, nail services, cosmetology, and dental settings. DuraVie is a reusable, non-porous silicone barrier intended to replace disposable bibs, towels, and surface covers while supporting proper cleaning, disinfection, and reuse between clients.

Cleaning protocols vary depending on the level of exposure during the service. Always follow your applicable state board regulations and disinfectant manufacturer instructions, including contact time requirements.

Understanding Contact Time

Contact time is one of the most important and most overlooked steps in proper disinfection. It refers to how long a surface must remain visibly wet with a disinfectant for it to be effective. Spraying and immediately wiping does not disinfect.Always check the label of your chosen product. Common contact times for professional-grade disinfectants are:

  • Barbicide Disinfecting Wipes: 2 minutes
  • CaviCide: 3 minutes
  • CaviCide 1: 1 minute
  • 70% Isopropyl Alcohol: allow to remain wet and air dry (low-risk use only)

These are examples of commonly used products. Always verify the contact time on your specific product label before use.

Protocol by Service Type

Between clients, the priority is efficient disinfection appropriate to the service level performed. At the end of the day, inspect the cover for any signs of wear, clean thoroughly, and allow it to fully air dry before storing.

Low-Risk Services | No Blood or Broken Skin.

For services without blood exposure or compromised skin, such as nail services, body treatments, or general surface protection.

  1. Wash the cover with warm water and a mild detergent using a soft cloth or sponge.
  2. Rinse thoroughly to remove all residue.
  3. Allow the cover to air dry completely before reuse or storage.

Appropriate for nail services, body treatments, and general use without wax or blood exposure.

Waxing Services

Waxing is a primary use case for DuraVie and requires a two-step approach before disinfection.

  1. Remove visible wax residue using an oil-based wax remover or a small amount of baby oil on a soft cloth. Do not scrape.
  2. Wipe the surface clean and remove any remaining residue.
  3. Apply an EPA-registered disinfectant appropriate to your setting and allow it to remain visibly wet for the full contact time specified on the label.
  4. Allow the cover to air dry completely before the next client.

Because waxing services may involve contact with compromised skin or follicular exposure, use an intermediate-level or higher disinfectant. Products such as Barbicide Wipes or CaviCide are appropriate choices.

Nail Services

  1. After the service, wipe the cover to remove any visible product residue such as oils, lotions, or creams.
  2. Remove nail polish residue using 70% isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth if needed.
  3. Wipe the surface with 70% isopropyl alcohol and allow to air dry completely before reuse.

Appropriate for nail services where there is no blood exposure or broken skin. If broken skin is present, follow the higher-risk protocol below.

Body Treatments, Massage, and General Surface Use

  1. Wipe the cover with warm water and a mild detergent using a soft cloth.
  2. Rinse thoroughly to remove all residue.
  3. Allow to air dry completely before reuse or storage.

For services involving oils, lotions, or product buildup, a wipe-down with 70% isopropyl alcohol before air drying as appropriate.

Higher-Risk Services: Possible Blood or Body Fluid Exposure

For services where incidental contact with blood, saliva, or other potentially infectious materials may occur, including certain waxing services, and dental or clinical settings.

  1. Put on appropriate gloves and personal protective equipment before handling the cover.
  2. Remove visible debris by wiping the surface.
  3. Apply an EPA-registered, medical-grade disinfectant such as CaviCide or Barbicide Wipes according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Allow the surface to remain visibly wet for the full contact time on the label. Do not wipe early.
  5. Allow the cover to air dry fully before reuse.

This protocol aligns with CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings (2003) for environmental surfaces and noncritical patient-care items.

Storage

Once fully dry, DuraVie may be returned to service or stored flat or loosely rolled in a clean, dry area. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and sharp objects. Do not store while damp.

Inspection and Retirement

Before each use, inspect the cover for signs of wear including tears, punctures, cracks, or permanent surface degradation. A compromised surface cannot be reliably disinfected. Retire any cover that shows these signs and replace it.

DuraVie is designed and tested for repeated disinfection cycles when used as directed.

What Not to Use

To protect the integrity of the silicone surface and ensure continued cleanability, avoid the following:
  • Bleach or bleach-based products
  • Ammonia-based cleaners
  • Abrasive scrubbers, pads, or brushes
  • Sharp tools or scrapers
  • Acetone (except in small amounts for nail polish removal on low-risk surfaces, followed by disinfection)

Clients with Broken Skin or Open Wounds

If a client has broken skin, an open wound, or active skin compromise in the area the cover will contact, follow the higher-risk disinfection protocol above for that service. When in doubt, use a higher level of disinfection than the service would otherwise require.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do
  • Remove product residue before disinfecting
  • Follow disinfectant contact times exactly as listed on the label
  • Allow complete air drying before reuse or storage
  • Inspect before every use
  • Handle gently to preserve the silicone surface
  • Use appropriate PPE when handling covers from higher-risk services
Don’t
  • Use bleach, ammonia, or abrasive cleaners
  • Scrape with sharp tools
  • Store while damp
  • Wipe away disinfectant before the contact time has been met
  • Skip medical-grade disinfection when blood or body fluid exposure may be present

Important Notes

  • DuraVie is made from premium grade, non-porous silicone and functions as a passive physical barrier.
  • It does not provide antimicrobial, sanitizing, or disinfecting action on its own.
  • It does not replace required PPE, sterilization, or standard infection control precautions.
  • Cleaning and disinfection are always performed by the professional using products and protocols appropriate to their setting and applicable regulations.
  • Each practice is responsible for maintaining compliance with state board requirements and workplace infection control standards.
